SpeakIt – A decent text-to-speech plugin for Chrome and Firefox

I’ve recently discovered SpeakIt, a browser plugin for Google Chrome [download]¬†and Mozilla Firefox [download] that reads out selected passages in a synthesized voice, right in your browser. Of the many speech engines I’ve tried, only this and the text-to-voice feature in the Amazon Kindle Touch were to my satisfaction. The plugin is based on iSpeech, who have their own plugin, but I have found SpeakIt slightly more usable (though the voice output is the same).

Of the many voices available in settings, I’ve found that the “US male” voice was the smoothest, especially when set to the lowest reading speed.
